Agora

In ancient Athens, the agora was the central location where citizens gathered to hear news, discuss and, later, trade. The agora was the heart of the city’s political, cultural and spiritual life and it gave birth to the Greek word for speaking in public: ἀγορεύω (agorevo). It is this spirit we hope to channel in this section of the website.

Here, the Agora is a public forum for discussing events that are unfolding in Greece and beyond. Contributors to Macropolis, as well as guest posters, share their views on political, economic and other matters, while also offering readers the opportunity to express their opinions. As always, those who fail to respect the sanctity of this forum will not be allowed to share in its benefits.

The EU, the troika inquiry and the big disconnect

They came to praise the Greeks, not to bury them. “The path of economic and social recovery is long and arduous, and has exerted – and is continuing to exert – hard sacrifices,” said European Council President Herman Van Rompuy at the opening ceremony of the Greek presidency last week. “But we all pay tribute to the courage and fortitude of the men and women of Greece.”

Greece has entered its year of growth and recovery. At least that is how the government, its eurozone partners and a number of commentators have billed 2014. Many analysts and politicians also insisted last year that the country had begun this upward trajectory. In reality, though, Greece’s narrative was far from linear in 2013. There is no reason to believe this year will be a straight story either.

Myths have fuelled much of outside perceptions of the Greek crisis. From the lazy Greeks to the runaway shadow economy, observers have sought explanations for the country's problems in these contrived and skewed observations on life in Greece. Like all fairy tales, though, they make for a good story but are rarely a true reflection of reality.

Words will always hurt

The potential words have to inspire people and drive events should not be underestimated but their ability to do harm should not be taken too lightly either. It is truly regrettable that at this crucial time in Greece, some of the country’s decision makers have chosen to appeal to the devil inside us rather than the better angels of our nature.
